Checking to make sure no one was watching her, Lychee climbed up the steps of the escape and took her usual seat on the very top step. She'd begun doing this every night - when everyone else at the orphanage fell asleep she would sneak out, and come and see her parents. They were stars now, so they couldn't really talk to her, but she liked to let them know she was okay.
Looking up, she began searching for them. Noa had taught her that if a star twinkled at you, then it was the people you'd lost saying hello. Many of the adults down here made weird faces at him when he said that, but Lychee thought it must be true because there was always only two stars that blinked at her.
Spotting them, she smiled, waving. It was dark but she knew they'd probably see her, because they'd have special powers now they were stars.
Just before she was about to speak, however, Lychee froze up. She could hear footsteps coming towards her...

Matya grumbled to herself, kicking the dirt on the floor. It had been a long day and she still didn't have anywhere to stay. She couldn't stay in the spaceship she was stowawaying on, seeing as she'd gotten into a fight with one of the guys on it and now they weren't letting her back on.
"Urgh idiots." She kicked a stone towards a wall, hands in her pockets. In the darkness of night, Matya almost fell into some hole in the ground. Kneeling down she noticed a scared face not too far below the surface. Not wanting to look soft, but knowing it was only a kid, Matya looked at them questioningly.
"Whatcha hiding for kiddo?"

Lychee's eyes widened as the stranger began talking to her. After hesitating for a moment, however, she decided that this new face was friendly enough and she would be okay to respond.
"I... I don't want the police to arrest me." she made sure to keep her voice a whisper, in case there was anyone else nearby that might hear them. She smiled, looking upwards again, "I came out to see my mama and papa."
For a minute she wondered if this new person knew that people became stars when they died, but then she realised that they would - Lychee couldn't see too well in the dim light but it seemed like this stranger was an adult, and adults knew everything even if they sometimes didn't agree with it all.

Matya paused for a while, looking around in case there were any police around. It wasn't just the kid who didn't want to get arrested. Leaning down even more on her crouching position, She shook her head slightly.
"Dere's no pleece. If there was I'd be gone from 'ere" Matya's accent seemed strong for some reason, subconsciously put on more. At the mention of the child's parents, Matya looked confused and looked up only to see the sky. Before anyone had the chance to spot her she looked back at the child and raised an eyebrow.
"How come you came out here to see them?"

Lychee continued looking up into the night sky, wondering if maybe this stranger didn't know after all. She'd better tell them.
"Well, they're up there..." The little girl waved to the two stars that were still blinking at her and smiled, "Because they died, they got turned into stars and now I come and say hello to them every night."

Matya raised her eyebrow once again, lookng up at the stars. The kid couldn't be serious right, people turning into stars when they died. But then again she was only a kid, and as long as she had someone to look after her the weakness of it wouldn't be that bad. If Matya ever said that to any of the guys she wouldn't last long. Deciding to pretend to go along with it, sure the kid couldn't do any harm to her.
"Who told you that then?" She moved further down, sat on the edge of the hole and leaning forward. It was more comfortable to crouching, knowing she'd probably be here for a litte while.

"Oh, Noa told me." She waved at the stars again, hoping they were watching her make a new friend and that they'd be proud of her, "He looks after me and teaches me all kinds of stuff like writing and reading and how to get food for everyone. He used to get annoyed when I called him papa but he doesn't now." she giggled, but then realised she still didn't know who this new person was.
Crawling a little more out of the hole - she was sure her new friend would protect her from any police - she copied the other's actions and took a seat on the edge, "What's your name? Mine's Lychee."

Matya raised an eyebrow, feeling slightly conflicted at the thought of a male who was actually nice. She made a note to try and meet him one day, if he had a massive ego he was straight in her bad boks no matter how nice he was.
"I'm Matt." She nodded her head, chewing on her cheek slightly and looking up at the stars.
"You really believe that star stuff?"

"Hi Matt!" Lychee waved unnecessarily, giggling a little. In response to the question, she nodded vigorously, "Uh huh! Of course I do, because Noa told me, and he knows everything! Plus, only two stars twinkle at me so it must be them."
The little girl smiled quickly at Matt and then looked upwards again. When she next spoke, it was directed towards the sky, "Mama, Papa, this is Matt. He said there's no police around so I'm safe, you don't need to worry!"

Matya sighed slightly, leaning back on her hands and closing her eyes. Even if she didn't believe in the whole stars thing herself she wasn't one to break down a little girl. She'd been small once before, although she'd had to toughen up. Atleast she had someone looking after her and she did have a little point.
"What's it like underground?" Matya didn't know where the queston came from, but she didn't take it back. Not even ooking at the girl when she said it.

Giving a tiny yawn, Lychee leant her elbows on her knees and her chin on her hands, thinking about how to answer the question. She didn't know what Matt wanted to hear, but there were so many things she could tell him...
The little girl rubbed her eyes a little, wishing she'd brought her teddy up here with her so she had something to cuddle. She was quite tired - as she usually was at this time - but this feeling normally went away after a while of being up here. The wind was cold and very good at waking her up.
"Well, it's really dark and there's lots more dirt down there than there is here, and there's not much food so sometimes we don't eat for ages. Plus there's not many proper rooms so people can always see you, and sometimes there's scary people down there." she considered for a moment more, "But it's not all that bad I guess, because there's nice music and it's warm and there's nice people like Noa and Immy and Kristy to give us cuddles and make sure we're safe, so..." she trailed off at the end of the sentence, choosing to end her monologue with a sweet smile in Matt's direction.

Matya raised an eyebrow, looking down into the hole and thinking for a while. Hearing the yawn from the little girl, she actually felt sorry for her. Normally she'd ignore kids and leave them to the world to teach. But today she felt nicer, mainly because she'd never actually met an under-class person before. She stood up suddenly and grabbed Lychee under the arms before climbing down into the hole. She could atleast get a good look at what it was like down there and use it as an excuse.
"Maybe I'll see you round again kid?"

Snuggling into Matt sleepily, Lychee nodded, "Of course we'll see each other again! That's what friends do!"
Although they were inside now, she gave another quick wave to her parents. Maybe they would be able to look through the hole and see her as she went deeper into the underground.
Struggling to keep her eyes open, the girl suddenly realised how warm her new friend was. She could hear the musicians in the center - the music now was very slow and calming, and this combined with how comfortable she was right now was making her even more drowsy - she knew she'd fall asleep any minute now...

Matya rolled her eyes, walking through the underground in an attempt to find a place to set the kid to sleep. She'd have to visit the underground again anyway, hoping they weren't complete idiots like those on the surface. Lychee seemed to be tired to the pirate, not really moving around as much. The music drifting over caught Matya's attention as she walked towards it. If there were people there she could drop the kid off with them and leave. That way she'd know she was safe and she'd be able to get back to whatever it was she was doing before. Actually she couldn't remember, her mind attacked with stars and silly stories. But they weren't silly to the kid, no she believed them. Holding in whatever sound was about to leave her mouth at the thought, Matya drew closer to the music's source.

As the little girl was being carried closer and closer to the source of the music, she began losing the battle to keep her eyes open. Trusting her new friend to look after her she snuggled closer and gave in, letting herself drift off to sleep.
